What is Your Thought Source?
Whether we have disabilities, addictions or good old apathy, our thoughts are the source of our Attitudes.
What is the source of our thoughts? Are our thoughts shaped by positive events and observations or by negative? We’re the gatekeepers of our minds, what type of thoughts do we let enter the kingdom?
If constructive thoughts are planted positive outcomes will be the result. Plant the seeds of failure and failure will follow.
Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.
Keep your thinking right And your business will be right.
Man, alone, has the power to transform his thoughts into physical reality; man, alone, can dream and make his dreams come true.
12 step programs
Some people battling addiction to mind or mood altering substances, self serving behaviors and assorted forms of negative or depressed thinking have found that they could be restored to a sane Attitude only by accepting spiritual help. Even those vehemently opposed to spirituality have found help through 12 step programs. A description of the initial phase of being restored to a sane Attitude through a 12 step program is found in the following quote taken from page 25 of the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book.
“Almost none of us liked the self searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of shortcomings which the process requires for its successful consummation. But we saw that it really worked in others, and we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet. We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed.
“The great fact is just this, and nothing less: That we have had deep and effective spiritual experiences which have revolutionized our Attitude toward life, toward our fellows and toward God’s universe. The central fact of our lives today is the absolute certainty that our Creator has entered into our hearts and lives in a way which is indeed miraculous. He has commenced to accomplish those things for us which we could never do by ourselves.”
The two former paragraphs sound like it requires supreme commitment but that the freedom gained is worth the effort required.
My experience and the experience of many whom I’ve spoken with is that people who have experienced an addiction they are powerless to overcome on their own or a disability they need help dealing with have an easier time turning their life over to a power outside of themselves.
Help for Everyone.
Someone asks, “What about us atheists? Is there no help for us?”.
There are 12 step programs for atheists that are based on the same principles as the traditional ones that espouse God as a Higher Power. These secular programs have helped many restore a sense of sanity and calmness to life, so they obviously work. The teamwork aspect of the spiritual 12×12 program is present in the secular version as well. Still, to me, the 12 step programs that call God their source of solutions as well as their higher power seem like the easier softer way, both for now and the hereafter.
