The Four Agreements

Our Attitudes are Castles or Coffins

Because I’ve seen and felt the incredible power of Attitude in multiple aspects of my rehab, I share different viewpoints on it in my speaking. When I read something particularly relevant to Attitude, I make a point of sharing it.

The book The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz seems extremely relevant to our ability to choose our Attitudes. Although one’s Attitude is not the apparent focus of his book, when I read The Four Agreements through “Attitude glasses,” each of the Four Agreements Ruiz discusses applies directly to our Attitude.

The Four Agreements:

1.   Be impeccable with your word.

Anybody who has noticed the correlation between how we speak and how we feel knows that we are all creators. How we speak creates how we feel. In the early 80s, when I first began discovering the power of Attitudes, is when I first noticed that I feel how I speak more often than I speak how I feel. In fact, if I’m feeling poorly, and I choose to speak in a friendly, encouraging way to someone who needs a kind word, my mood magically improves.

2.   Don’t Take Anything Personally.

Oscar Wilde is the only person of repute that I’m aware of to have said anything about the wisdom of not taking personally things that others say about you, but I’m sure other well known and many less well known people have said similar things. Without bothering to look up the exact words Wilde used, I will try to capture the essence of what he said: People’s insults or criticisms say more about them than they do about you.

3.   Don’t Make Assumptions.

This is such a well known error in judgment that it’s an oft repeated fact that to assume something makes an ASS out of U and ME.

4.   Always Do Your Best.

This is the agreement that allows the other three agreements to become a regular part of our routine. In applying this agreement to our Attitude or to anything else concerning who we are, it’s helpful for me to remember that what was my best one day may not be my best the next day. Regardless of the quality, let’s keep doing our best. Winners Don’t Quit! No more and no less than our best. As I’m acquiring the habit of The Four Agreements, my best is becoming better than it used to be.
